DJ Premier and Torii Wolf seem like an unlikely pairing. As Premier told us in a recent interview, he heard of Wolf through his mentor King of Chill and was immediately struck with the artist. They start cooking up in the Kaufman Astoria Studios in Queens, New York, where he relocated after the closing of HeadQuarterz/D&D in 2015. The two locked in for two weeks and came up with Torii Wolf’s new album ‘Flow Roiit.’ MASS APPEAL was invited into the same studio for the latest installment of our video show, Studio A.
In the studio, the two have the chemistry of longtime collaborators. While playing us before-and-after versions of one of the songs, straight from the Pro Tools session, Wolf explained that she came up with the anagram title ‘Flow Roiit’ after being inspired to “jumble up” her name similar to how samples are chopped up. “I felt it was reflective of us,” she said.
The sessions between the two led to DJ Premier producing 90 percent of the of the album, with Wolf playing multiple instruments and Premier’s band The Badder also contributing.
